Sigh. I've had to eat my own words slightly (they tasted pretty pompous ), actually) for our dear Linda. Now take note, this does NOT entail discussions of the iniquities of our government and etc. This is about political THRILLERS only. So Linda--about that Michael Glass book (which could also be classified, by the sound of it, as futuristic or sci-fi)?

Love the Tom Clancy. Jack Ryan is one of my all-time favorite characters, mostly because I picture Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan. I haven't kept up with him (TC) the last few years, though.
I mentioned on the other board Michael Palmer's The First Patient, and put a bit of a spoiler there (sorry!). It is written from the point of view of the president's personal physician, and the Washington types that reviewed it, including Bill Clinton, said it was very realistic. It is also very scary, highlighting how wonderful advances in science can be used by the bad guys, who don't have red tape to deal with.
I love political and medical thrillers. This was a good one. Everything in it is conceivably possible, which makes it scarier.

Miss A gave Mom a copy of ANGELS & DEMONS for Mother's Day. I'm gonna wait for her review. (I could almost swear I read A&D after THE DA VINCI CODE, but for the life of me I can't remember any of the plot points. Except maybe explosions?)

My favorite political thriller writer is David Baldacci whose latest book "First Family" I read this past week. I love his books so much I get greedy about them and, as a result, read them too quickly. The next page keeps beckoning. Although his books are fictional, many of his characters are usually easily recognizable. In "First Family" Jane Cox, the First Lady, seems suspiciously like a Hillary Clinton who, as we know, has been suspected of many nefarious deeds. The resemblance is more subtle than usual, but after having read so many of Baldacci's books and knowing his penchant for drawing from real-lfe characters, she seemed like the obvious comparable real-life person. As far as "The DaVinci Code" is concerned, I bought the book the first week it was published and loved it. I bought each of two friends a copy rather than risk their not returning it when both asked if they could borrow it. In fact, the copy I bought for my friend Brenda was the illustrated version which was beautiful in and of itself. I never used to be possessive of my books, but after having been burned so many times, I learned to be more discriminating about who I was willing to loan them to.

I know I read BURR and LINCOLN of the Vidal series, and I think maybe 1876 also-- My favorite Vidal though was an old one called JULIAN--about the Roman emperor Julian the Apostate.
